Ethiopia, you were awesome!

 In Literacy Project

As anyone who has travelled to a West African country with attest to, the first thing that greets you when stepping off the air-conditioned plane is the warm embrace of the hot, humid climate. So flying into Ethiopia from Ghana, and stepping out into a beautifully cool evening was already an excellent start.

Ethiopian hospitality

As per usual, a quick bag drop and shower combo at the hotel, followed by a walk around town to grab dinner (the Pizza Hut wasn’t open yet, so our cravings would have to wait until the morning). About a block away from our hotel, the ever-friendly Ewan began chatting to a local man: Aaron. One thing led to another, and Aaron invited us out to a try a local dinner, at a very local establishment.

When in Rome…

As the saying goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. So when in Ethiopia, we did as the Ethiopians do, at a small eatery well off the beaten track. With the charismatic Aaron as our host, it was a traditional platter for dinner, eating with our hands, using Injera (a local bread) to scoop up all sorts of delicacies.

A Brand of Firsts

Slice of Africa in Ethiopia was special for two reasons. One: it’s the Slice of Africa, which is always special. Two: the event was held at our very first store in Ethiopia, the day before the official media launch. That means that the kids, media, and team who tucked into pizza at this event were the first in their country to test our world famous pizza.

Ready to rock!

Every guest who walked into the Pizza Hut that day was met with a roaring round of applause and cheer from the team. We had the full team sitting around the tables in the upstairs section of the store, reading, cutting and coloring in with the kids. What a feeling, to see our people so fired up and ready to get involved!

Every success is a full team effort, but a special shout out must be made to Carly Tonkin, Travis Purcell from Pizza Hut South Africa for going above and beyond to get this store ready, along with great support from the local franchisee team.
